Learn how to safely remove coffee oils and residue from your standalone grinder using Urnex Grindz tablets. Step-by-step instructions for effective grinder maintenance.

Quick answer

Use Urnex Grindz tablets to safely and easily remove coffee oils and stale grounds from your standalone grinder without disassembly.

Why use Grindz instead of rice or soapy water?

Rice can be too hard for grinder burrs and may leave starchy residue. Soap and water risk rusting the burrs and electrical damage. Grindz tablets are formulated to absorb and lift coffee oils, then crumble into a fine powder that you can simply wipe away. They are designed specifically for coffee grinders, making them a safer and more effective choice for regular maintenance.

Important: Grindz is for standalone grinders only

Urnex Grindz is NOT suitable for super automatic espresso machines with built-in grinders. The tablet material can clog the brewing unit. Use it only with standalone burr or blade grinders. If you own a super automatic, look for cleaning products specifically designed for that machine type.

How to clean your grinder with Grindz tablets

  1. Step 1: Empty the bean hopper: Remove all coffee beans from the hopper. If possible, remove the hopper and brush out any loose grounds. Common mistake: leaving a few beans in the hopper, which can mix with the tablets and reduce cleaning effectiveness.
  2. Step 2: Set your grinder to a coarse setting: Adjust the grind size to the coarsest setting. This prevents the tablets from being ground too finely, which could cause them to clump or pass through too quickly. Checkpoint: A coarse grind helps the tablets move through the burrs slowly, maximizing oil absorption.
  3. Step 3: Add the recommended amount of Grindz tablets: Pour about 1–2 tablespoons of Grindz tablets into the empty hopper. Check your grinder's capacity — for larger grinders you may need more. Common mistake: using too many tablets at once, which can overload the motor. Start with the minimum recommended dose.
  4. Step 4: Grind the tablets completely: Turn on the grinder and let it run until all tablets have passed through the burrs. You should see a fine powder coming out. Common mistake: stopping the grinder mid-cycle, which leaves partially ground tablets stuck in the burrs. Let it run fully.
  5. Step 5: Discard the ground tablet powder: Remove the grounds bin and discard the powder. Do not use this powder for brewing — it is not coffee. Wipe the bin and the chute area with a dry cloth. Checkpoint: If you see dark streaks in the powder, the tablets are still absorbing oils. You may repeat steps 3–5 for a deeper clean.
  6. Step 6: Wipe down the burrs and hopper: With the grinder unplugged, use a stiff brush or dry cloth to remove any remaining powder from the burrs and hopper. Do not use water. Common mistake: using compressed air, which can blow powder into the motor bearings. Stick to brushing. After cleaning, run a small amount of fresh coffee beans through the grinder to purge any residual tablet powder before brewing your next shot.
