Category: How-to Guides
A dosing funnel keeps coffee grounds contained during grinding, reducing mess and ensuring a consistent dose. Learn how it simplifies espresso prep and why it's a must-have tool.
Quick answer
A dosing funnel sits on your portafilter to catch grounds directly from the grinder, preventing spills and helping you achieve a consistent, mess-free dose every time.
Why a dosing funnel matters for your workflow
Without a dosing funnel, coffee grounds can scatter across your counter, wasting coffee and creating a mess. A funnel directs grounds neatly into the portafilter, so you get every gram where it belongs.
It also lets you grind directly into the portafilter without holding it steady, freeing your hands for other prep steps. This is especially helpful when using a grinder with a dosing cradle.
Compatibility considerations
Not all dosing funnels fit every portafilter or grinder cradle. The Breville the Dosing Funnel™ is designed specifically for 54mm Breville portafilters and works with the Barista Touch, Barista Pro, and Barista Express grinding cradles. Always check your portafilter size and grinder model before buying.
Frequently asked questions about dosing funnels
- How does a dosing funnel reduce mess?
- It acts as a chute that guides coffee grounds from the grinder directly into the portafilter, preventing stray grounds from landing on your counter or scale.
- Can I tamp with the dosing funnel on?
- Yes, many dosing funnels are designed to stay on during tamping. This keeps grounds contained and helps you get a level, consistent tamp without disturbing the dose.
- Will a dosing funnel fit my grinder?
- Check your portafilter diameter and grinder cradle shape. The Breville the Dosing Funnel works with 54mm Breville portafilters and specific models. For other grinders, measure your portafilter and look for a funnel with matching specs. Measure your portafilter diameter before purchasing to ensure a snug fit.
